A better access into the new bookshop was required as wheelchair users would find it very difficult to get over the stone surface.
Therefore the plan was to provide a car parking area to the right of the double door entrance, with a path laid from the road up to the doorway. The parking area was levelled because trying to concrete the whole area would mean moving an awful lot of stones etc.
Plan B was to then lay pavers from the roadway, as there were plenty to get rid of at Brimscombe Port. First job was to measure everything, calculate the materials needed and start to dig out the very compacted area to allow the kerbs to be laid.
Whoever laid the original surface did a very good job as it needed a breaker to dig out the footings.
The large whacker plate was used on the car parking area to get as smooth a surface as possible-rather difficult with large stones.
The mobile tool store was collected and brought to site and concrete was mixed and the kerbs set into the ground. The distance across being frequently measured to make sure there would be no gaps in the pavers.
The week after, a full house of 6 arrived with Maurice and Richard on the mixer, Bob cutting pavers to fit, Matthew with his handmade tamper, whilst Duncan laid the pavers in the correct pattern and I helped a bit.
The bookshop staff kept us topped up with tea and biscuits which we liked a lot.
A wheelbarrow and buckets of top dressing dust was collected from the port and brushed into the final surface. Instructions being left not to drive over it for a few weeks.
Mo Francis was pleased with the result and we must agree-it looks nice.
