Brimscombe Bookshop Expands Further

The CCT Bookshop at Brimscombe is continuing to expand with further storage containers added to accommodate their increasing stock of books. As part of this an original shed was dismantled to make space for the new containers, but they now needed this rebuilt as well. With limited dredging underway Will saw this as an opportunity for Vince and Steve (who have previous shed building experience!) along with John and Martin to be pressed into service.
Having never seen the shed before we were despatched to Brimscombe along with a random selection of tools to see what could be done, and were met with a kit form shed of unknown type plus concrete blocks and sand from the previous visits to site.
Having worked out which was the shed base the team set-to to move the blocks to form a base, and after some head scratching came up with a plan to position and level these to give the best possible support for the base as we expect them to fill it with heavy books. After a rather damp lunch the base was completed and we then started on the puzzle of how to build a shed when we didn’t know what it was supposed to look like!
The 4 sides soon went up, but we then found that we had an apparently flat roof with no obvious slope to drain the water away. A phone call to the depot for more timber to resolve this was then cancelled after we found that the roof panels did have a small amount of slope as the battens were higher in the centre than at the sides. Hopefully this will be enough to drain correctly assuming that we had got the shed base level!
We then moved on to felting the roof, which for which none of is claimed any real knowledge, but after sourcing some more nails it started to look like a shed again albeit one that needs a coat of paint! All that left was for the door and window to be fitted although some parts of the shed are going to need tidying up by the chippies.
The bookshop team then came out to inspect our work, and apart from having put the window on the wrong side (apparently it should have faced the wall!), and some concerns about how the door opened they seemed please with our work, and can now start filling it up again.
My thanks to Vince, John and Martin (who almost got left behind in the shed!) for their support in this and hopefully next week we’ll be back to dry dredging work!
