Co-Dominant Failure

We became aware on Sunday afternoon, of a large fallen branch of a tree close to Blunder Lock. We advised that a logging team would sort it on Monday.
So ace Banksman Maurice H loop and CSO Bob H. (with Bob having THREE chainsaws ready) set out to remove the casualty.
A large Alder branch had suffered a “Co-Dominant” failure! The failure itself was quite spectacular!
This type of failure occurs when, as a tree grows, a branch is formed which is about the same size as the main trunk (the leader). Trees grow fatter from the outside, and the two competing branches force each other apart, until, often assisted by a Gale (like Sundays) the union fails. It’s entirely natural, usually unheralded and rarely dangerous. (The trees along the canal are regularly inspected)
Bob and Maurice set too and removed all the branches and set them Into gaps in the hedge (bugs and invertebrates love them) After a slog, all was logged up,
…and with a transport team’s help…
all was recovered for log sales.
BTW, Bob used all 3 saws, all need sharpening, ready for Wednesday
