The East End Monday team were busy removing dead sycamore trees at Bow Wow when last blog was published, this work was completed by the end of November. The focus then moved on to the stretch between Cerney Wick and Weymoor Bridge to cut the towpath hedge back. Winter jobs are governed to a degree by the resources available, the key factor currently being a lack of chainsaw operators, hence the move to hedge trimming.

There’s nothing much to say about hedge cutting, it’s a job that can be done in winter and it stimulates the growth for next year. Progress has been steady despite of the damp weather, but hand tools and a hedge trimmer can’t compete with the tractor mounted flails used by farmers these days.
One motivating point is that this length is only about ¾ of a mile, not the whole way to Inglesham!
There’s been some comment recently about the need to cut back dead trees, an example of what happens when trees aren’t managed can be seen along towards Weymoor, a large branch has snapped off a tree and fallen into the canal. Old trees can shed heavy branches without warning.
The team are talking a well-earned break for the next 2 weeks, consecutive bank holidays on Mondays.
