East End – The clocks go back

Half-term has ended, the days are getting shorter and the clocks have gone back; another sign of the approach of winter is that the strimmers have gone into hibernation until next year. The Monday gang were out this week to clear up the arisings from tree cutting work carried out in the summer by contractors working for the area power distribution company. Trees and power lines don’t mix, when the trees get too tall, they can cause the wrong sort of short.
Some of the wood was burnt, the rest went into the construction of biodiversity habitats.
This section has been strimmed 3 times over the summer, so we were surprised to spot a geocache box that has been hidden in a stump for about 4 years. The last entry was in May 21, so the hiding place has proved a bit too elusive.
The volume of flow over the spillweir has ramped up with all the recent rain. The canal overflow water spills into the County Brook which runs alongside at a slightly lower level.
It took four bonfires to clear the arisings, all in all a good morning’s work for the team.
Meanwhile, at the Eastern Depot, log sales are running ahead of the expected demand. Deliveries are going out on each working day (Tuesdays and Thursday each week). The stock is running down, but rumour has it that a fresh supply of timber is on the way. That will mean it’s all hands back on log production for a while more.
