The final task at Ryford Lower Lock, was to remove the stop planks. and see how effective all the hard work of caulking of the upper gates and complex plank replacement of the lower gates had been. With help of the Augustus Gloop team, Frank commented that “the stop planks popped up like larva from a volcanic split in the ground!”
The top gates were once again water tight after Frank’s caulking job, and look good. Then to fill up the lock chamber and check for leaks.
The lower gates which had the new planks fitted on near side were looking good and the emergency repair done to the offside gates with a couple of extra planks also were holding back the water with a good seal.
We now need to await a suitable slot post COVID restrictions (its near impossible to work 2m apart in fitting the planks) to complete the off side gate. Frank commented: “Many thanks to all involved, we have proved the method and made a great improvement to the lock operation and effectiveness”.
