Statement from The Cotswolds Canal Trust – 30th January
Despite the team’s best efforts, the initial vessel removal plan was unfortunately unsuccessful. The conditions encountered during the lowering of the pound proved to be more hazardous than anticipated, with some parts of the plan deemed too risky to proceed. Additionally, concerns over potential damage to the nearby railway bridge, along with the health and safety of our volunteers, led to the decision to halt the operation. As a result, no further attempts at the planned recovery will take place this week.
Water levels in the pound are being gradually raised, and additional protective measures have been put in place to contain any contamination. The towpath is now open as normal.
Our team is consulting with experts and specialists to assess the situation and develop a revised recovery plan. We remain committed to finding a solution and will make another attempt in the near future.
We truly appreciate your continued support and patience as we navigate these challenges. Given the vessel’s weight, location, and condition, recovery remains complex —even for specialised firms. However, we are determined to contain the site and continue progressing toward a successful recovery.
