Volunteering – Lock Keeper

Lock Keepers

If you’ve ever paused to watch boats navigate a lock, you’ll know it’s one of the most fascinating sights on the canal. As a Volunteer Lock Keeper, you’ll be right at the heart of this activity – helping boaters through, monitoring water levels, and ensuring safe, smooth passage along the Cotswold Canals.

Lock keepers are the friendly, welcoming face of the waterway. You’ll meet all sorts of people: offering assistance, sharing local knowledge, and telling the fascinating stories of our canal’s history and restoration.

No prior experience is needed – we’ll give you full training in lock operation, safety, and communication. All you need is a willingness to learn, a friendly manner, and sensible footwear!

Andy

We come down every couple of weeks to flush the locks through, clear debris, and grease the paddle gear. Vounteering is a real mix of skills and experiences, and I enjoy the camaraderie.
