WD Machine Shop Nears Completion by Steve P
The pressure was on from Reg to complete the machine shop roof as his electrics were under the part of the roof that had not been completed, and were only protected by tarpaulins! Nevertheless, the wiring continued in parallel with the roofing work.
By this stage we had completed the roof on the rear of the shop, and work then started on the front progressing more quickly (but with a few minor mistakes!) now that the team had learnt how best to cut and fit the panels.
With the canal end completed the chippies then joined the fray and helped to fill in the end section so that roofing felt and cladding could be fitted on top of the strand board to give a tidy and hopefully weatherproof finish at the ends of the roof!
The weather-proofness was tested on numerous occasions over the past 2 weeks, but with Vince’s completion of the ridge we were finally watertight on top even if not at the ends!
Work then continued on the ends of the roof and the team managed to fit the heavy roofing felt with the minimum of cuts, and then to clad this with the leftover cladding from the back of the barn so that the end elevation blends in with the barn from the canal side.
This week saw a major step forward with power on in the machine shop so that we could see what we were doing and it didn’t take long for Ken to move back in to sort out the multiple wheelbarrows that had been used for temporary tool storage.
By close of play on Wednesday we had completed the cladding on both ends, and filled in the gaps at the ends of the trusses although there are still a number of gaps to be addressed. Next week, assuming that Martin has managed to buy us the bits, we need to sort out the front gutter, sliding door fittings and most important of all re-install the stove in its new position next to the compressor!
Work on the services can also continue to wire in the machines, and complete the compressed air system that Vince and Peter had made a good start on this week. We can then turn our attention to the chippies’ wood store, the container moves and last but not least the update to the woodwork shop, so still some way to go!
